In his recent New Yorker article, Cal Newport revisits Asimov’s stories and draws a direct line from mid-century robot tales to today’s AI dilemmas. Rereading Asimov in 2025, Newport finds the old questions more relevant than ever: Can we really “tame” AI with rules? And what happens when those rules fall short?

Asimov’s stories remind us that no set of rules—however well-intentioned—can fully capture the complexity of human values. The work of aligning AI with our ethics is ongoing, cultural, and collaborative. It’s not something we can finish with a clever algorithm or a single breakthrough.
